HIV Brits in the the dark as to possible life cover options Posted on : 11/05/2012Figures released today indicate that up to 80% of Brits who are HIV positive are unaware that they are able to take out a life insurance policy. The findings that formed part of Unusual Risks Mortgage and Insurance Services' annual report highlighted that many HIV positive are unaware that up to 50% of insurance providers now offer life cover to suffers. Speaking to lifeinsurance.co.uk, Unusual Risks marketing manager Chris Morgan said:
"We have to remember that people living with HIV have been told by the insurance industry that they cannot have life assurance for nearly two decades. It is understandable that people may feel cautious towards the new HIV Life Assurance products as they are still a relatively new idea."It is thought that many of those who are HIV positive assume they are unable to get life cover due to the difficulties experienced by men to gain cover in the late 1980s to mid-1990s through insurers being unable to asses the risks of HIV. However, since 2005, the options for HIV suffers have drastically improved, with many leading insurers now offering cover. Many of these advertise their 'statement of best practice' on HIV insurance, following previous practice which included insurers inquiring about sexuality when cover when processing a quote.
